Cindy Zackowitz
in memoriam
1965-05-28 - 2012-09-23

Cindy Lynn Zackowitz, age 47, passed away unexpectedly on September 23, 2012 at her home in Anchorage, Alaska. She was born May 28, 1965 to Walter and Barbara Zackowitz, the youngest in a family of girls, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska. The family moved to Anchorage in 1970. Cindy attended Anchorage public schools, graduating from Service High School in 1983. Cindy graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a BA in Journalism/Photography.

Her special talent and gift to others was her outstanding photography and poetic haiku which allowed her to express her appreciation for nature and the world around her. When not working at Sam’s Club, she was usually on a walk, seeking another haiku or photo inspiration; or, better yet, both! She also enjoyed cross-stitching and fishing. Cindy was a thoughtful and caring person who never forgot special occasions or birthdays of those she loved.

Among Cindy’s most noteworthy accomplishments: she was the co-founder of the Alaska Haiku Society, she was internationally known for her haiku works; and her photographs were highlighted on more than 50 national and international websites. She was a frequent contributor to the Sierra Club’s ‘Daily Ray of Hope’ website. Those achievements always ‘tickled’ her.
